OUINET - PPP Connection
PPP Access to UL Lafayette Network Facilities via a Modem
The material below describes the previous dialup system.
Please click on the
STEP-UP Modem Pool
for the latest information.
Information Networks provides all staff members and faculty
with a PPP account. PPP is
the common name for the Point to Point
Protocol. Several software packages
use the PPP protocol to directly interconnect
personal computers (PCs) to the Internet. A PPP request
form can be filled out to request PPP capabilities for staff and faculty.
Please review the capabilities and limitations
of the service as described in this memo.
- Who Can Use OUINET DIALUP ?
- Use of OUINET PPP service is restricted
to the UL Lafayette staff (Faculty,
Unclassified, and
Classified) that are not on temporary appointment.
PPP users must have a CLID issued
and have an active account on the UCS
computer system.
- What Are the Limitations of Use ?
- OUINET PPP must be used to support
the primary missions of the University,
that is,
those activities that lead to degree granting.
Surfing the Internet
(defined for the purposes of OUINET DIALUP as
the use of UL Lafayette or State of Louisiana facilities
to browse or view for enjoyment, diversion,
or without goal related to the University mission)
is explicitly prohibited.
Additionally,
all access to University
equipment is in under the conditions of the
UL Lafayette Policies on Access and Usage of
Computers and Networks'.
- What Equipment is Required ?
- Simply put,
a PC,
a modem compatible with OUINET DIALUP,
the software, and the skill.
Information Networks is unable to provide
any support for PC operations,
configuration of PPP,
source of the PPP software, etc. The
PPP user, or groups of users,
will need to resolve problems on their own
until a campus support group is available.
At this time the
University Computing Support Services Help Desk (337-482-5516)
is starting to work on a supportable
PC configuration of PPP.
- What Will Information Networks Provide ?
- We will provide three items.
- First,
a form for staff to request PPP
activation. The PPP activation form
will be available from Building System Managers.
If you do not know who your building system
manager is call Information Networks at (337) 482-6418.
- Second,
we will test the service using our
software and PCs. Our extent of
problem solving is,
if our equipment and software are working,
then the service is working.
If your software does not work,
then we
can't help you find the problem.
- Third,
Information Networks will provide
any settings we use in configuration
of the PPP service (such
as max MTU size) upon request.
We will probably use WFWG,
WINSOCK and TRUMPET for testing
(this may change to match the
Computing Center supported configuration).
- What Else Should PPP Users Know ?
- Here are some other tidbits of information.
When user 'abc1234' uses the PPP service,
any computer that 'abc1234' is using changes
its name and IP address.
The host
name becomes 'abc1234.louisiana.edu' and the
IP address becomes an address which is
unique to that PPP user.
A PPP user may only have a single session
active at any time. Any PPP user that
attempts multiple
sessions may:
- 1) impact the campus network
- 2) have two or more systems that do not function
- 3) experience disk inconsistencies
- 4) have PPP privileges terminated.
- PPP users can make use of multiple systems
as long as only one is active at any time.
The PPP dialup number is the
OUINET DIALUP staff number,
(337) 482-2671.
-
Notice: The use of PPP services is habit forming.
