OUINET - PC to NET via Ethernet
CONNECTIONS
So you want to connect your PC via the ethernet connection. To do
this you will be required to call TT# and make a
request with Information Networks to fill out a HARF form.
Otherwise,
known as a Hostname and Address Request, or an IP address request.
In doing this, you will be asked several questions concerning your
connection. The following is an example of information that will be
asked of you:
- Department Campus Mail Address
- System User - (the name of the primary user of the PC)
- Hostname -
(This is nothing other than a name for your PC
A suggestion for naming your PC - might be to follow a specific theme.
Don't be afraid to be creative...ex. Math Dept - might use specific math
terminologies; Biology Dept. - might use a certain species of life form;
English Dept - might use authors,. . . etc.
The name stays with
the PC. Unless you plan to keep your PC indefinately, select a name
so that moving locations or changing owners is not a problem.)
- Domain - (Almost always louisiana.edu.)
- Building and Room
- Phone Ext. - (phone that is closest to the machine being connected)
- Manufacturer of the PC - (e.g. Gateway, Dell, Phoenix, Apple, etc.)
- Model of PC - (Manufacturer Name and System Model Number. This can
can be a real model number or system class - e.g. 486DX2-66, P-90, etc.)
- Operating System - (The basic operating system in use - e.g. Windows 98, Windows NT, Linux, MacOS, etc.)
- IP Software (optional) - (The software used to support TCP/IP communications -
e.g. wfwgip, mddos, lynx, solaris, linux, trumpet, chameleon, macTCP,
microsoft TCP/IP, etc.)
- Property Account Number - State tag Number on the System Unit or
if not University owned, the Serial Number of the PC. If the PC is not
owned by the University, a letter will need to be signed by the Dept.
