PC IP Address Setup Information
Procedure In Setting Up IP Address when PC is ordered
You have just ordered a PC, and you would like to know what steps there
are in setting up your PC to the network.
After your PC is ordered, it may be received by Central Receiving. Once
Central Receiving gets your PC, they should contact Property Control. Property
Control then establishes a Property Account Number for your PC. This is
also known as the State Tag Number. This number is unique to each PC. Central
Receiving delivers the PC to you.
Once you have received your PC, and your Propert Account Number or State
Tag Number has been established, you will need to contact Information Networks.
To do this, dial TT# (88#) if you are calling from on campus or
dial
482-0088 if you are not on campus. If a staff member is available,
you will be asked several questions in regards to your PC in setting up
your IP address. If a staff member is not available, please leave a message
on audix, and we will promptly return your call. Listed below is the information
that will be requested.
-
Address - Department Campus Mail Address. A confirmation letter
will be sent to you.
-
System User - Name of the person who uses or owns the PC.
-
Hostname - This will be a name you choose for your PC. Don't be
afraid to be creative. Some departments follow a theme. Ask your department
head or secretary if there is a theme you could use.
-
Domain - More than likely, this will always be louisiana.edu.
-
Bldg Rm/Pt - This will be the ISIS building abbreviation and full
room number.
-
Phone - Telephone that is closest to the system.
-
Mfg - Manufacturer of PC - e.g. Gateway, Dell, Phoenix, Apple, etc.
"IBM Clone" will not be accepted.
-
Model - Manufacturer Name and System Model Number. 486DX2-66, P5-90,
etc.
-
Op Sys - The basic operating system in use - e.g. Windows 98, Windows
NT, MacOS (with version number), Linux, etc.
-
IP Software - (Optional) The software used to support TCP/IP
communications.
-
PA # - The State Tag Number assigned by Property Control. This tag
should be on the System Unit (CPU) itself, not the the monitor or keyboard.
If the PC is not University property give serial number and approval letter
from the Department Head.
At this time, you will also be asked if you have ethernet capabilities.
This is referring to proper cable connections and ethernet card installation
on your PC. The cable may be of coaxial variety (Cable TV) or twisted pair
(telephone wire). An appropriate connection must be available, and the
ethernet card must be installed on your PC. If you do not have ethernet
capabilities, a Connection Request Form will need to be completed. This
can be done while on the phone.
After all the above criteria have been met, you will then be given an
IP address for your computer..
You will then be instructed to contact UCSS for software installation.
It will not be necessary to contact UCSS unless you have the following
three items:
-
A valid PA Number or State Tag Number.
-
Ethernet capabilities.
-
An IP Address assigned by Information Networks.
Failure to have this information will result in delayed Internet connection.
If for any reason Information Networks cannot honor the IP Address,
you will be contacted by phone.
