Procedures: Weather Threats

Minimizing Weather Damage

As you know, the possibility of very severe weather conditions is nothing new for this part of the country; however, it may be new for your computer equipment and software. Please follow the steps listed below to help protect your computing equipment if UL Lafayette suspends operation due to severe weather conditions.

  1. If you have not already completed a backup of your system programs and data ... this is a good time. Storing the backup floppies or tape with the computer system is not a good idea. At home, or in the office of a friend in another building on campus is a better place to store your backup. Use a "Zip-Lock" bag to store media and protect it from water, dust, etc.
  2. Turn off, then unplug all equipment from the wall outlets.
  3. Disconnect the OUINET line (if present) from the PC or terminal (use the wall jack disconnect, its like a telephone plug). If you need help call Information Networks at (337) 482-6418.
  4. Windows may break. If equipment is located near the windows consider relocation to a less exposed position. Call Information Networks at (337) 482-6418 if you need help. Close curtains and blinds if present.
  5. Cover the equipment with plastic such as heavy-duty garbage bags. Arrange the plastic so water can runoff and does not puddle. You must be certain that the equipment is unplugged before covering, otherwise you may prevent ventilation of the equipment and in the extreme case start a fire.

Thanks for your help in protecting University resources.
